Womens Health

Women have unique health needs depending on their stage of life. Significant phases of hormonal changes from adolescence, through pregnancy and motherhood and into menopause influence not only the menstrual cycle, but also general health, nutritional needs, and susceptibility to disease. Conventional pharmaceutical treatments most often act as a band-aid solution suppressing the symptoms and complaints but not addressing the cause of the issue. Nutritional therapy addresses the root causes and supplies the body with the nutrients it needs to be able to heal itself.

These days, women live with more expectations than ever before and under the pressure to hold down careers, run the household, care for their partners, family and children, lend sympathy and empathy to friends and make it all look effortless. Constant multi-tasking and juggling work and family can quickly lead to low energy, disrupted sleep and anxiety. It takes not only a huge physical and mental toll but also requires a lot of compassion, intuition and spirit which can be draining when there is no time to restore.

It often seems that women are more affected by chronic symptoms and diseases. Much of this has to do with a woman's reproductive cycle. Each month, the female body puts a tremendous amount of energy and resources into preparing for the possibility of a baby. During menstruation, 80% of the active immune system and reserves go towards renewing the womb. This significantly cuts the energy the body has to ward off illness at that time. During ovulation, 40% of the immune system go towards the process, once again leaving the door open for illness to take advantage. Production of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline both also go up at these times. That means that twice a month women become more susceptible to health issues like viruses and bacteria, for instance. This emphasises the importance and priority for women to take care of themselves. This is especially true during menstruation, ovulation, pregnancy and recovery from childbirth.
